FARM BLOG ~ Arrival of New Ducks and Chicks on the Farm
Well, it’s that time of year again. Time to bring home the new baby chicks to enhance the existing flock. Here at HiBar Ranch we hatch out our own chicks and turkeys. We’ve now embarked on ducks. This will be our first year with ducks and we are really excited about it.
In order to introduce new genetics into our chicken flock this year we have decided to purchase chicks. Since we are really big fans of Rhode Island Reds, an amazing dual purpose breed, we purchased 12 ISA Browns, which are a hybrid from Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Whites and are bred for sheer production of eggs. These hens can lay up to 300 eggs per year.
Additionally, we have added to our flock, two breeds of ducks: Rouen, a heartier and heavier pet/meat duck and also Khaki Champbell, a prolific egg layer.
The new arrivals just got settled in about an hour ago with food, water and heat lamp …. in our kitchen of course. And, with live critters around that are tiny and churping, it once again reminds us that Spring is right around the corner.
Have a great day and God Bless! L. Davis
